Why Interior Design is Important

An interior designer’s job is more than just to make a space look aesthetically pleasing. It is to create a space that combines their client’s style and wants and needs, while making it functional as well as beautiful. An interior designer’s job is not to change the client’s style to match the designer’s but rather to help them know their own style and create a space that reflects that. An interior designer must

listen to the wants and needs of their client and understand how the space they are designing will be used.

Interior designers assist their clients in visualizing what layouts, colors, patterns, and materials will look like together to help the client visualize the finished project. They can look at a room and see what is working and what is not. They understand the importance of the layout of the room, how furniture is arranged, the materials chosen, the colors used, and how all of it not only affects the overall design but also the lives of those who live in the space. They understand how each single element and design decision must work together to create a cohesive and functional space.

Interior designers are problem solvers, hearing and understanding their client’s wants and needs, creating a space that will meet their functional needs as well as reflect their style, all while fitting into their budget. When planning a space, it is not just about what looks pretty but about choosing items and materials that will work within the space, that will last and that are beautiful. Functionality and beauty need to work together to create a livable and aesthetically pleasing space. An interior designer helps to make their client’s home a place that they not just live in but love. Interior design can affect our everyday lives. If a space is not designed well and, therefore, does not function well, it impacts those who live or work within that space.

In interior design no detail can be overlooked, no matter how small it may seem. For even the smallest of details can mean the difference between a great design and a poor one; between a space that functions well and one that does not. The location of items, the amount and size of storage, the height of things, the ease of movability around the space, and the ease of use of the space are just some of the things an interior designer must take into consideration.

Along with the functionality, the overall look and feeling of the space is also important. A space has the ability to make one feel different things. A space can be calming, relaxing and peaceful. It can feel inviting and warm. Or, if it is not designed well, it can feel disjointed and chaotic and be a place you want to leave instead of a place where you want to stay. Every decision an interior designer makes is important for the end result of the design.

As an interior designer, I take great pride and a sense of responsibility in helping my clients create a space that they love. A home is one of the biggest investments (if not the biggest investment) someone will make, so it is important for it to be a place they love and that works for their everyday life. Getting a space you love should be a fun and enjoyable process. My goal is to help my clients have a home that reflects them and what they love. Just as each person is unique, I believe each home should be as well.
